In 1958-1959,there was a large scale pandemic of cholera across 35 provinces in Thailand. Public health care service at that time could not produced enough vaccine and saline solution because lacking of proper tools and funding. High quality vaccine and saline solution need to be imported and the one that manufactured in Thailand at that time still not keep up to the proper standard. That event caused a lot of death.
At first,King Bhumibol Adulyadej donated his own money to science department of Thailand Red Cross. They used that money to purchase needed equipment for manufacturing vaccine and saline solution. Also forming a fund with special purpose for eradicate cholera.
In order to raise the money for that fund,he started a special on-demand radio program which anyone could call in to request any song from him and he would perform that song live on that radio program. That make this fund got a lot of attention from throughout the country.
After that fund raising event,he gave a direction to put this fund to be used on prevention this kind of pandemic. By performing a research for manufacture high quality vaccine and saline solution. Educate people to keep hygienic practice. And since 1960s, cholera is no longer a threat to Thai people anymore.
